Chicory is considered a cool season perennial forb, which has the ability to persist for several years when managed properly.  Because it is a perennial it is slower to establish, compared to cereal grains and other annual forages.  However once established , chickory is highly preferred by deer and has an excellent resistance to grazing pressures.  A very deep tap root helps chicory reach deep moisture during dry periods.
